Parent Education
We believe that parents are the experts when it comes to their children. With this in mind we offer Parent Education sessions facilitated by our Behaviour Therapy team.
Behaviour Therapy operates on a simple set of rules: Parents and other adults in a child’s life set clear behaviour expectations. They praise and reward their child’s positive behaviour and discourage negative behaviour through fair, immediate and consistent consequences. In return, they get long-term improvements in their child’s behaviour, communication and problem-solving skills.
By learning specific techniques to deal with everyday issues, such as tantrums, non-compliance, absconding, hitting etc. It’s about gaining skills to help your child with toilet-training, eating, anxiety and sensory overload.
Some of the skills parents will learn include:
- Reinforce good behavior with a reward system — stars on a chart or extending a special privilege, like playing a favorite video game for an extra half-hour or going to a movie on Friday night.
- Discourage negative behavior by ignoring it — according to experts, a child often uses bad behavior to get attention.
- Take away a privilege if the negative behavior is too serious to ignore.
- Remove common triggers of bad behavior.
- Reduces children’s aggression towards themselves and others
- Improve children’s school performance
Parent Training Can Transform Your Home Life
Caring for a child with autism can be challenging. We empower parents by teaching them the necessary tools and strategies to respond to their child’s actions and needs. Our parent training services are customized and based on parent priorities to treat socially significant behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, communication, and adaptive skills that enhance the lives of the individuals, such as dressing and toileting.
